My favourite things: 2021 Edition

Updated: May 14

We’re near the end of this “wonderful” year and I don’t think there’s anyone who’s sad about that! Trying to look at the glass as half full there’s one good thing about 2021. And 2020 for that matter. We had plenty of time to reflect, read, listen and watch a gazillion different things. Wether we took advantage of it is a whole different matter… But at least we had the opportunity to hit the pause button for a couple of months. So with that in mind I decided to compile a list of my favourite things. Wether that is books, movies, podcasts or whatever else! They don’t have to be produced in 2021 to be on the list. I just happened to “consume” them this year! Since the gift season is upon us, these might make for a nice gift. For a loved one or just for yourself! So… Let’s get started!!

Favourite TV show:

Mare of Easttown:

I don’t know where to begin with this one! I absolutely loved every single minute of the show! Great atmosphere, great plot, brilliant acting and absolutely wonderful cinematography. It really is a wonderful show. For those of you who might now know the plot, IMDB sums up the show wonderfully without giving away anything. ”A detective in a small Pennsylvania town investigates a local murder while trying to keep her life from falling apart.” I don’t really want to give away anything else. Just trust me! It’s a really nice Crime, mystery.

Thankfully the Blu-ray is out now, so if you don’t have HBO the Blu-ray is your next best bet:

Honorable mentions:

True Story: Kevin Hart on a more serious role. Almost binge watched it in one sitting! It’s that addictive! Worth noting how great Wesley Snipes is also as Kevin Hart’s brother. You can find the show on Netflix.

Favourite movie(s):

I’m going to cheat here and actually give you more than one options, but there are so many good movies to choose from!! Let’s start with a weird one first!

Gunda:

This one’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea but it’s definitely worth a watch! It’s as simple and bare as it can get. A black and white documentary about the daily life of a pig in a farm. Yep you read that right! Even if you don’t want to watch it right now just add it to your watch list for some later time!

Till Death:

Love these type of movies: A character is trapped in a situation and has to somehow overcome it. The movie is shot in one location (mostly) which only adds to the tension. Beautifully shot and nicely paced. Constantly keeps you on your toes!

Honorable mentions:

Sparks Brothers: An Edgar Wright documentary about the most influential but relatively unknown band: The spark Brothers.

Freaks: This one is weird! Right when you think it’s going one way it goes a completely different direction. Don’t read much about it. Just watch it!

Favourite book(s):

Of course I have to cheat here as well... Two wildly different books but equally good!

Anxious People: Fredrik Backman

A series of events unfold when a would-be banker disappears into thin air. Backman writes like Hornby. Elegant stories with no flowery prose. Just everyday language for everyday people.

The hidden world of everyday design: Roman Mars

If you haven’t listened to the podcast 99% invisible then drop what you’re doing and download it immediately! Roman Mars carried his passion to a book form and this book is the result of it. We get to read about everyday objects and their use!

Favourite Podcast:

Heavyweight:

I love, love, LOVE this podcast! It’s about coming to terms with past experience and things that are weighing you down. INCREDIBLY well produced, funny and heartwarming. You can listen to it here:
